Hello my loves,

In our Advaita teaching, one gateway to Insight is the recognition of the mechanistic nature of the body/mind organism with which we are so often identified as the author.

Last week, three articles appeared in the L.A. Times describing scientific discoveries that support the mechanistic approach. The first described how researchers in Vienna have identified the hormone responsible for our making decisions to trust someone or not. After inhaling the hormone spray subjects were significantly more likely to make decisions to trust strangers.

In a second article it was reported that geneticists working with fruit flies were able to identify and manipulate the gene responsible for sexual orientation. After the gene manipulation male fruit flies began exhibiting the sexual patterns distinctive to females.

In a third study on a subject so near and dear to so many of our hearts, scientists at St. Thomas Hospital in London discovered that a woman's ability to have an orgasm was directly linked to her genetic make-up.

It is through questioning the basic assumptions of human existence that insight into our true nature may be realized. One of the most insidious of these basic assumptions is that I (as this body mind organism) am the author of my thoughts, feelings and actions. This Teaching is without dogma or doctrine, its sole function is to ask again and again - IS IT TRUE?

Spiritual teachings and modern scientific research may provide moral support for your conclusions but the real benefit comes from the actual investigation itself.

In the deep examination of this most fundamental of questions - profound Understanding sometimes results.
