Chat Room

The chat room is open 24 hours a day. Understanding can come anytime and anywhere. Words, ideas, disciplines and practices are coincidental. At best, these are pointers to that which can not be encompassed and captured by the mind. The Chat may be full of ideas and concepts, or you may enter to find you are the only one around. Even an empty chat room can be a pointer.

Privacy statement: Please note that the chat room records transcripts. Recording chat room transcripts serves the same purpose as recording a satsang.  Transcripts serve members only and are not used for any other purpose.

Java™ updates: The chat room is a Java™ application. We recommend using the latest update on on your computer. Many computers ask permission before updating, and we suggest you approve these updates. You can download Java™ free and learn more about it at java.com.

Chat room troubleshooting
The Chat room functionality is tested everyday and most users connect easily. If you can't open the chat, please START by updating Java™ and your web browser (such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari). Update Java™ at java.com.

If you still can't open the Chat room, please read the following troubleshooting information before emailing the webmaster.

Can your computer run the chat software? Probably, but sometimes an essential feature is unchecked or disabled in your browser, causing problems. Make sure your browser will accept cookies, and that the Java™ option is enabled in your browser options.

Some known issues:

  • Using the chat at work may be difficult because of network security policies. You may need to ask your local IT/network administrator to allow TCP connections on the port in use by SigmaChat. Contact us to find out which server and port number are allocated to this chat room. The webmaster can find this information in the Help section of their chat room's control panel. SigmaChat generally uses ports 8000-8009 at client#.sigmachat.com, where # may be any integer.
  • WebTV browsers do not support Java™ Applets like our chat. For WebTV users, no work around exists. Java is a memory intensive language needing more memory than the WebTV set-top boxes contain.
  • If you are running a version of a Microsoft Windows, or a BSD/*NIX variant ™ and see only a broken link icon, you can download a copy of the Java™ Virtual Machine to run our application. Download Java™ Support (Sun Java™ Plug-in [for Opera, MSIE, etc]) at http://www.java.com/.
  • Some browsers (Netscape 5 and earlier) running on Macintosh platforms can't run the software due to issues we do not control. We recommend Mac users discontinue use of Netscape.
  • Some AOL members report that the built-in AOL browser has difficulty connecting to our service, or does not load colors and emoticons correctly. To resolve this, minimize your AOL connection, and use the Internet Explorer browser that came with your operating system to access the chat room.
